There’s nothing that sells a Ford Mustang more than the roar of its engine. I love how this one turned out; I really wanted to get as much engine sounds as I could.

I really liked the original, except I thought the music wasn’t the right choice for Mustang enthusiasts. If you’ve been next to one at a stop light, you know what I mean. I used a combination of hip hop and metal in this ad to target what I consider the supreme Ford demographic.

As seen from the video, there are a lot of moving parts that required sound. Very quick cuts and a lot of ambient engine noise really brought this video to life. The 5.1 surround challenge was to stop short of putting all of the engine into the LFE (sub woofer) of the mix so that it just roars underneath you. I listened back to this constantly, and I must admit I had ear burn (fatigue) faster than normal. I just mixed out that nice. A lot of freeway passing, heartbeats, and other ancillary sounds were passed from back to center and center to back again. Only the 5.1 gives the true experience of it. I gotta say, though… the subwoofer experience of the engine clips really gives you the feeling of sitting in one. By chance I was able to rent a new Ford Mustang on a trip to San Diego, and I can’t describe the roar of the engine and the feeling of the car as it roars down a Southern California freeway. It truly is like riding a Mustang. I hope I did it justice with the sound and music.
